The marshes – flat, fertile and favoured by birds
The unique cultural and natural landscape of the marshes has been formed by tidal deposits of tiny particles of clay on the seaside meadows – particularly during storms. This form of landscape creation is unique to the Wadden Sea. The Tøndermarsken and Ballummarsken areas are some of the very best and most interesting birdlife areas in Denmark – and both have been designated international bird protection areas. The marshes are simply ideal for the birds, and millions of them stop off here during migration to rest and “fill up”. The food and the peace and quiet that the birds need to breed or simply survive the winter months are to be found here in ample supply.
