Skjern Enge
The countryside and birdlife at Skjern Enge – the area around the mouth of the Skjern Å river
– are the result of the largest nature restoration project in the history of Denmark. After 30 years of intensive agricultural exploitation, the Skjern Å river valley has now been reborn
as an inviting and exciting stretch of countryside where unkempt West Jutland scenery dominates once more. Today, Skjern Enge is one of the most important areas of countryside in Denmark for wading birds. The area comprises a mixture of winding rivers, wet meadows and lakes – an attractive and fascinating landscape perfect for sampling a whole range of natural delights. It is a fine example of the distinctive West Jutland fjordland, marked by open vistas, flat plains (around Skejrn Å river), winding watercourses, lakes and meadows.
Skjern Enge is a paradise for birds. The region also contains an impressive range of birdwatching facilities including notice boards, walkways and birdwatching hides. In fact, the entire stretch of countryside has been made easily accessible through the establishment of a fine network of walking and cycling paths, which come really close to the birds in several places. The solid paths are very suitable for cyclists, wheelchair users and people who find walking difficult.
